Monday, 1 December 2014, NEW YORK, NEW YORK - In yesterday's New York Times Sunday Edition "Can Mushrooms Treat Depression?" with link below for interested readers widely published chef and cookbook and mycologia author Eugenia Bone co-president of the New York Mycological Society briefly relates her one experience eating psilocybin containing so-called "Magic Mushrooms" in middle age and also gives a documented historical overview of past (up to 1968) as well as recently resumed and expanded new highly controlled studies of the effects of psilocybin on the human brain and behavior.
Diverse research suggests that psyilocybin acts in some subjects as a therapeutic agent for several areas of mental disorders including the treatment of anxiety, depression including the depression and despair experienced by some cancer patients, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), alcoholism (as was also shown in some alcoholics with LSD until it was criminalized for all purposes but not before some studies with alcoholics having reported never taking another drink after a single controlled LSD session), and even in one first-person experience reported to Ms. Bone in which they claimed psilycybin had cured their stuttering.
One method of research now available with the availability of M.R.I. imaging was reported in "a study published last month in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface which compare [sic] M.R.I.s of the brain of subjects injected with psilocybin with scans of their normal brain activity." The study made the remarkable finding from the M.R.I.s that psilocybin literally creates new neural pathways between cortical regions of the brain otherwise never connecting which although almost certainly only temporary (psilocybin in controlled administration has been shown to have about a four hour psychoactive duration) has been demonstrated to have lasting therapeutic effect. Specifically psilocybin controlled administration has achieved long-term relief for suffering from mental disturbances such as those listed above "giving patients a new perspective on their lives" moreover including even non-sufferers as well as an adjunct facilitating psychotherapy.
It is hypothesized that even the single new experience of the temporary use of new neural pathways not normally existing between certain cortical regions of the brain may provide the needed impetus for minds suffering from otherwise non-responsive depression as well as PTSD and OCD and other conditions with patients' brains literally stuck in "ruts" or "negative loops" to get out of them when they are unable by any other means themselves to do so. This suggests tremendous possibilities not only for the relief of certain human mental disorders but also the increased ability of even those not suffering from mental disturbances to make more full use of the extraordinary unbounded potential of the human mind when it is functioning with the cognitive freedom possible only with an affirmative sense of well-being.
This situation of bona fide scientific and medical research derailed sounds unfortunately all too familiar for a range of psychoactive substances ranging from marijuana to LSD and countless others as well which have in many cases had all research in the United States and doubtless other countries pressured by the United States halted through the use of such transparent totally disingenuous political devices as "drug war compliance certification". This device was most obviously misused for example by the United States Government with countries such as Mexico to the extent that it became yet another example of one of the great many gross attempts at manipulation of public perception and opinion through State dissemination of misinformation which only served to further harm the credibility of "the authorities". This unfortunately exemplifies the countless blatant falsehoods which serve as the foundation for what it is not worth of the more than forty-five year phony and near universally recognized failure along with its totally foreseeable newly created "unintended" tragic consequences of the so-called "War On Drugs" such as endemic corruption and catastrophic damage to the integrity of law enforcement and to fundamental inalienable rights enumerated in the United States Constitution to name but a few.
The "War On Drugs" was started as no war at all but another package of total lies and manipulation and fabrication of the sick and deranged Republican psycho-sociopathic disgraced resigned GOP President Richard Nixon. Republican "Tricky Dick" Nixon actually was so dangerously delusional as to think it a good idea to make audio tapes of himself confessing enough of his criminal intentions and acts to get himself impeached and thrown from the Office of President of the United States had he not resigned not to mention spending his life in prison had he not been pardoned as revealed on tape to his co-conspirators and eventually most of the rest of the world.
Nixon as if maniacally bent on doing himself in not only boasted that he was considering taking up a hit man friend on a "free favor" to have Robert Kennedy "offed" but emphatically bragged that his entire subterfuge of a "War On Drugs" was nothing more than a phony fabricated hoax. This sentiment Nixon amply highlighted including by the ridiculous episode in which he named Elvis Presley at Presley's drunken request scribbled on a cocktail napkin on a first-class flight into Washington, D.C. a "Special Drug Agent" in a "ceremony" in which the criminal Nixon presented the wasted Elvis with some concocted badge and certificate in the Oval Office. This scene actually more or less accurately portended what a numbingly persistent nightmare fiasco Dick Nixon's "War On Drugs" was to become in the decades ahead.
The U.S. Government actually was dumb enough eventually to create, arm and outfit the entire opposing side of its "War" empowering a new enemy that could take down nations where no serious enemy had ever existed before. Unbelievably buying their own mindless rhetoric all branches of the State succeeded in helping establish and enable entirely new international terrorist psychotically murderous drug cartels reliably making one stupid policy move after another incrementally creating through public legislation and legal and illegal hare-brained "covert operations" more and much worse dangerous and deadly "War On Drugs" related problems at home and abroad than there ever were before, This has lead inexorably to a now long and seemingly forever rapidly rising death toll of countless thousands of totally innocent persons such that the "collateral" and increased damage far outweighs any damage from drugs that ever was avoided.
Finally shame on the scientists and physicians who have been too gutless effectively to resist this idiocy and tell the public what a sham it has been. Instead they have made the weak choice to buy into this deadly nonsense and abdicate their professional responsibility even though they knew or certainly should have known it was bad health policy and bs science and medicine originated and driven by a bunch of untrained uneducated unlicensed bozos. They chose to remain complicit and even turn on their colleagues who had had the courage and the brains to try to do what was right instead of parroting the ridiculous "anecdotal horror stories" of their Executive Branch agency puppetmasters. So long to the cowards who chose that path rather than insist that research continue and the competent level-headed prevail to truly identify the benefits and document the relative dangers where they really did and did not exist instead of choosing to discredit themselves along with the feds in the eyes of a whole generation who largely knew better just from lay experience and observation so that when the true risks came no one was left to listen to their warnings.
In any case hopefully in this regard too Ms. Eugenia Bone is correct that things are at least ever so slowly loosening up such that there is at least some hope of finally halting once and for all this charade that is destroying this country, its Constitution, the integrity of its medical research and care at such a needless cost of untold unnecessary misery to those caught up in this whole mess including the many and often silent unwell who are already suffering enough and desperately can use any therapeutic remedy that works without added further concern of being haunted by the shambles of forty-five plus years of rank idiocy.
The urgent need to remedy this situation literally destroying the fabric and heritage of this nation has been widely recognized and acknowledged by countless experienced members of the law enforcement community and even significant numbers of the judiciary. May the legitimate work of bona fide scientific and medical researchers go on and the results unencumbered by those with false self-serving motives whose greatest concern is their "turf" and their "toys" rather than the untold needless suffering that has been caused for others.
