• Friday, 23 January 2015, MANCHESTER, NH - For interested readers the CREDO Action petition linked to below nears 100,000 signatures of those condemning Senator Rand Paul for his false attacks as exposed also below for preying with blatant lies on the most disabled of Americans least able to defend or advocate for themselves. This demonstrates in the opinion of the Ninth Amendment editorial board an appalling lack of compassion and empathy especially by former physician Senator Rand Paul unbelievably on apparently friendly terms with Bill Maher for the enormous number of disabled Americans already having been determined after rigorous examination to be unable to provide for themselves and who largely paid into the system in order to receive these benefits should they ever need them. It is astounding that Senator Rand Paul would attack this group merely for his own perceived political advantage with a group with whom most decent people would not want anything to do. Senator Rand Paul heartlessly would throw the disabled into immediate devastating crisis as these benefits not only are most recipients' only source of income but with time they also include necessary medical care through Medicare. The fact that the Senator actually joked about doing this to people as documented in the full text of the petition page demonstrates not only a deep cynicism about the character of the people of his own country but also the Ninth Amendment editorial board believes shows the exact opposite of patriotism or national pride combined with a level of cruelty that leads us to conclude Mr. Paul is fit neither to be a physician nor that he is worthy of serving in any position in the United States Government representing anyone.  In actual fact rather than a majority of Social Security disability payments being made to persons "gaming the system" the Social Security Administration Inspector General as Senator Paul well knows has determined that fraudulent disability payments are "exceedingly rare" being just 0.02% of all payments.

• Meanwhile Senator Rand Paul and his fellow Republican senators even before starting the present Congressional session pledged to end all food stamp programs nationwide. Ironically at the same time that former physician now Senator Rand Paul attacks the disabled with lies, Republican Tea Partiers in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives really are trying to "game the system" as widely publicized by using back room accounting chicanery to reduce Social Security disability payments to all disabled as they presently are unable to accomplish this in a "legitimate" way by law. Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) payments are based on the disabled's contributions into the system before making a claim much like paying premiums to a private insurer. They also are paid widely to "wounded warrior" veterans rendered disabled permanently while defending and protecting the United States. Those who did not contribute into the system before making a disability claim all receive a set payment (SSI) which fairly could be said to be at or less than a "subsistence" level for these disabled Americans. Senator Rand Paul just launched an ugly attack on Social Security and on Americans living with disabilities. In an attempt to build support among extreme right-wing Republicans in advance of a likely presidential run, Senator Rand Paul told a group of New Hampshire Republicans that a majority of people who receive Social Security disability benefits are “gaming the system.”1 We need to hold Senator Paul accountable for this factually untrue and patently offensive attack on Americans living with disabilities and our Social Security system. Rand Paul’s attack on Social Security and disabled Americans wasn’t only heartless and offensive, it was also untrue. According to a report released in November by the Social Security Administration’s Inspector General, fraudulent Social Security Disability Insurance claims are exceedingly rare – accounting for just 0.02% of all payments.2 As as Social Security Works Executive Director Alex Lawson noted recently, “America has one of the strictest disability standards in the developed world.”3 This isn’t the first time Senator Paul has attacked Americans living with disabilities. In a 2010 interview, Paul said he supports abolishing the Americans with Disabilities Act – the landmark 1990 legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability – because it isn’t fair to business owners.4 Senator Paul’s latest attack on Social Security and those who receive benefits is the latest salvo in a decades-long attempt by radical Republicans to defund, destroy or privatize our Social Security system.
